For our last assignment, we were asked to come up with reinforcers that we can use with our student and the schedule in which we will give these reinforcers. Reinforcement can be given continuously, or intermittently (ratio/interval).
My student’s problem behavior is throwing toys, and the replacement behavior is handing the toy to an adult. At the start of the intervention, reinforcement will be given continuously. Every time she hands a toy to an adult, she will be given a reinforcement. However, the schedule will change to a fixed-ratio schedule such as FR3. Only after the third time she has handed a toy to an adult will she be given a reinforcement. The schedules will change to an FR5, FR10, etc.
I am having difficulties understanding how an interval schedule could be used in the classroom. Is anyone using an interval schedule with their student? Why types of reinforcements are you using with your student and with what schedule of reinforcement?

I have proposed to use a continous reinforcement schedule using a token system of delivering stars on a star chart to the student inorder to earn the prefered activity of his choice. I have proposed that the reinforcement be delivered for every correct transition behavior he exhibits and paired with appropriate praise that acknowledges the behavior, (e.g. that's asking for one more minute, that's setting down the bat, that's a good job picking up your ball, that's a good job walking back to the work area, ect.). If/when this proves successful then I want to thin the schdule by moving to a variable interval schedule and increase the number of correct transition behaviors he displays before the token (star) is given. So it sounds like you are doing something very similar. I work with very few students and with this student in a one on one capacity so it is easy for me to keep track of how often to deliver the star. Perhaps you could create a data sheet in excel that had your fixed intervals set as boxes and then you could mark-off on the sheet when she displays the behavior you are looking for and when she gets to the end of the series of boxes you will know that it is time to deliver her reinforcer. Good luck!
